Appropriate Cat Care – What Cats Really Need

Cats aren’t furry throw pillows with built-in purring – even if they pretend to be.

Cats aren’t furry throw pillows with built-in purring – even if they pretend to be. If you live with a cat (or more accurately, are tolerated by one), it’s worth thinking about what species-appropriate cat care actually means. Because only a happy cat is a healthy cat – and one that doesn’t destroy your curtains out of boredom.

1. Movement & Play – Cats Aren’t Decorations

Sure, cats can sleep up to 16 hours a day, but when they’re awake, they’re hunters. Even indoor cats need exercise. Scratching posts, toys, climbing spots, and hiding places are essential. (And no, a crumpled ball of tinfoil on the floor doesn’t count as enrichment.)

2. Companionship – On Their Terms

Cats may seem independent, but they’re not true loners. Many enjoy company – whether from humans or other animals. Just keep in mind: not every cat needs a feline roommate. But if you’re away a lot, it’s worth considering.

3. Safe Spaces – Because Hiding Is Healing

Cats love hiding spots, cardboard boxes, and windowsills – anywhere they can observe, nap, or just escape. A cat-friendly home has multiple cozy zones at different heights.

4. Cleanliness – Because Cats Are Fussy

A dirty litter box is basically an invitation for your cat to get "creative" elsewhere. Scoop daily, deep-clean regularly – or face the consequences (aka: mystery puddles).

5. Food – It’s a Whole Vibe

Cats are food critics. Cheap food with sugar and fillers? Hard pass. Go for high-quality wet food, occasional raw treats, and fresh water (placed far from the food bowl – cats are weird like that).
